A Good Samaritan who went to the aid of a woman in a town centre subway ended up getting kicked by a gang of youths.

The man, whose age has not been revealed by police, suffered bruises in the attack on September 1. He was taken to hospital as a precaution. 

Wiltshire Police said the man had intervened when he saw a young woman being abused near the underpass between the town centre and the bus station at around 10.30pm. 

The gang of six youths turned their attentions on him. He was kicked repeatedly in the face and head as he lay on the floor. 

A police spokesman said: "We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the attack, particularly a member of public who had helped the victim after the attack."
