The £31m road which will be the backbone of the 8,000-home New Eastern Villages expansion is now fully funded by bodies other than Swindon Borough Council.
The southern connector road, which will run from South Marston to the Commonhead Roundabout, will be built using £19m from Homes England’s housing infrastructure fund and another £11.6m from Whitehall’s Local Growth Fund and the Department for Transport. Gary Sumner, the council’s cabinet member for strategic planning, said: “Ensuring we have the right infrastructure in place before the New Eastern Villages development is built is crucial and I am delighted we have final sign-off on the significant funding from Homes England for this really important link road.”
Work on the road should start in spring 2021 and is due to be completed in summer 2022.
