A police chase driver who smashed into a football club’s gates couldn’t be sentenced after a “cock-up” with the pre-sentence report.

Kai Sawyer, 23, was arrested after his Ford Focus did £1,500-worth of damage to gates and fencing at Trowbridge Wanderers FC on August 5. He was being chased by police, having failed to stop for officers in Semington.

At the time, he was on bail for offences connected to a police chase near Oxford six months earlier. He was behind the wheel of a Seat Leon that failed to stop for officers near Headington in February and was then driven dangerously on Bayeswater Road and Waynefleet Road. He also stole a car radio from outside a house in Murcott Road.

Sawyer, of Aldeburgh Place, Trowbridge, admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, criminal damage, possession of cannabis and theft, when he appeared before Swindon and Oxford magistrates’ courts.

He had been due to be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on Friday morning, but after what Recorder Paul Garlick QC described as a “cock-up” the case had to be adjourned for three weeks. The Recorder told Sawyer, who appeared in court via video link from Bullingdon prison, that no pre-sentence report had been prepared.

“I’m sorry that we aren’t able to deal with your case today. It’s not your fault. The probation service did make attempts to make appointments to see you and prepare a pre-sentence report but something went wrong,” he said.

Sawyer will be sentenced on October 9.

Gary Venturi appeared for the Crown Prosecution Service. Tony Bignall represented Sawyer.
