A man has been interviewed in connection with an alleged rape near an Esso garage, police have said.

Wiltshire Police said the man in his 20s was interviewed under caution in connection with the alleged sexual assault – said to have occurred near the Dorcan Way garage late on September 10.

Last week, detectives issued a CCTV image of the man they wanted to speak to in connection with the allegations.

A police spokesman told the Adver: “Following our investigations and media appeal, a 20-year-old local male has been interviewed under caution.

“Our enquiries are continuing, and we wish to reassure the public that there is no further or ongoing risk to the public.”

CID chief Det Insp Paul Hacker said last week that patrols of the area had been stepped up in the wake of the incident, which saw a lone 19-year-old woman who had been walking from Greenbridge towards Covingham assaulted near the Dorcan Way Esso garage.

“We want to reassure the community that we are carrying out a thorough investigation into this assault and doing all we can to find the perpetrator,” he told the Adver.

“We are putting on additional patrols in this area and we would ask anyone walking alone late at night to be mindful of their surroundings and not to walk in secluded areas – if you can, walk in a group or with another person.”
