Students from Abbey Park School have been recognised for their service to the community.

Year 10 students Oliver Lancaster, Grace Ross, Izzy Metcalfe and Kaja Gupta received the Lions Young Leaders In service Gold Award for completing over 100 hours of community service each.

The pupils litter picked the school grounds, cleared areas for planting and set up a new school green house. They also produced and sent cards for the elderly, helped in a local care home and raised money for charities.

The internationally acknowledged award recognises young people aged 11 and 18 who have served the community over 12 months.

Maurice Watson, the past president of the Swindon Lions Club presented the awards.

He said: "It gave Swindon Lions great pleasure to present these four students with Gold Awards, in fact these are the first to be presented within the school environment, previously they have been within the Scout and Guide movement.

"We hope these will be the first of many, therefore encouraging students to carry out useful work within the community."
