SWINDON MP Robert Buckland has issued a stark warning to people using using nitrous oxide – you're risking your lives.

He spoke out after canisters were found on the streets and at beauty spots in and around Swindon.

Areas reported by members of the public include Old Town, Bridgemead Retail Park, Drove Road, Wanborough, and the hard shoulder of the M4.

South Swindon MP Mr Buckland said: “Taking nitrous oxide can be very dangerous and has even resulted in death.

“It is very dangerous to inhale nitrous oxide directly from the canister and doing it in an enclosed space is also very dangerous. If you take too much you risk falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen. People have died this way.”

Other risks include dizziness and severe deficiency of vitamin B12.

Mr Buckland added: “It can be hard to judge the amount to use safely. If you have too much you can end up fainting, having an accident or worse.

“Mixing nitrous oxide with alcohol is especially dangerous as it can increase the risks associated with both substances and can lead to an increased risk of accidents.”

The 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act makes it illegal to give away or sell.

He added: “Supply and production can get you up to seven years in prison, an unlimited fine or both.

“Like drink-driving, driving when high is dangerous and illegal.

"If you’re caught driving under the influence, you may receive a heavy fine, driving ban, or prison sentence.”

Wiltshire Police has issued warnings previously when a large number of gas canisters were seized in Lydiard Park.

Insp Carly Nesbitt  said: “Using Nitrous Oxide recreationally is not a matter of harmless fun. They can pose both immediate and long-term health risks to anyone who tries to inhale this gas. This can include dizziness, severe headaches, feelings of paranoia and in the worse cases, it can lead to breathing difficulties, unconsciousness and even death. Taking it directly from the cannister is particularly dangerous.

“Anyone considering using this gas, particularly younger people, needs to think very carefully about the risks involved. To find out more I would urge people to seek reputable medical advice. The website www.talktofrank.com has some very useful information.”
