Oxford Road has reopened after engineers fixed the burst gas main near the White Hart roundabout.
The pipe was struck by Swindon Borough Council contractors at around midday on Friday. The contractors, Osborne, had been attempting to find the main after the site plans they had been given appeared to be wrong.
Around 10 people had to be evacuated from nearby houses and the road was shut for more than 12 hours by Wiltshire Police.
Firefighters were forced to issue an appeal to people not to let off fireworks for fear of igniting the gas cloud above the road.
The council said there was no public health risk from the gas.
