When Megan Strange was inspired by the birth of her little boy to write her first Christmas song the only thing she had to hand was some kitchen roll.

Undeterred, the sleep-deprived new mum raced to put down all the lyrics and then worked out the chords on a piano.

Now First Christmas is being released and Megan, 31, from North Swindon couldn't be more excited.

She said: “It’s for my child so it’s meant to cheesy and fun as well as festive and upbeat. I think that’s what people need but it’s not my usual style of music, I'm usually more emotive and darker than this in songs. I actually wrote the song last Christmas, but because of being a first-time mum I just didn’t get round to recording it in time. I was so sleep- deprived I just knew my voice wasn’t going to be up for it.

“Lots of people said to me last year, it’s his first Christmas but he couldn’t open his eyes or really appreciate it so he won’t understand. Whereas, he gets to enjoy it this year a bit more and he’s showing more of an interest in things."

She and her son River are filming a video to go alongside the song, with the help of her game designer husband Simon. “He’s been so helpful, taking a lot of time helping me. He’s not really a cheesy person either but he believes in me. I have found it a lot harder than I thought it would be but it’s a learning process."

The part-time English lecturer at New College, started signing as a shy 14-year-old in school and has written more than 150 songs. She has an EP on Spotify and Amazon Music.

She is in the process of putting an album together but due to Covid it’s taking longer than anticipated.

“I teach both GCSE and A-level students and they’re quite down at the moment, I think they assume I will know when Covid will end as they keep asking me about things," she said.

But she feels the single and video will bring some cheer. "This is the most positive thing I’ve been working on, you know I may look a bit silly in my Santa outfit but it’s just a bit of fun for my child so I don’t care."

The video has a Home Alone theme and features the family sausage dog in the cast.

“I magically appear in Swindon looking through a shop window and somehow because it’s Christmas I appear in the shop," she said. "So the theme is sort of me having a good time and boogieing.

"You can’t really control babies and animals so we will see how they perform.

First Christmas will be out on music streaming platforms on November 27.
