A STUCK lorry closed a single-track lane in Old Town for more than 12 hours on Saturday.

The fuel tanker was stranded on Mill Lane at 1am after its delivery driver attempted to reach Fairford while Junction 15 of the M4 was shut overnight.

The narrow road near Wichelstowe did not reopen until 2pm.

Pictures taken by Adver reader Alex Pope show the lorry being rescued by a crane.

Alex said: “It took until 2pm on Saturday for the lorry carrying 40,000 litres of kerosene to be recovered.

“Mill Lane was supposed to be closed over a year ago, but ongoing arguments about the design of the road closure have caused delays with no end in sight.”

The police say they were called to the road at 1am on Saturday after the tanker completely blocked the road.

A spokesman added Swindon Borough Council took over the closure in the early hours of Saturday.

Plans to close the northern section of the road have been in the works for some time and there was a public consultation in May 2019.

The council wants to close the road, which connects Old Town with Wichelstowe, after concerns about more traffic on the single-lane road.

But Old Town residents are not keen on the idea, saying it would make it harder to reach the new housing development, Waitrose and the Hall and Woodhouse pub.
