A THUG who was spared jail last month for a catalogue of violent crimes smashed a bottle of booze in Tesco – then started snacking on sandwiches.

Jamie Burfoot, 28, told staff at the Ocotal Way Tesco on Friday, December 4, to call the police as he wanted to go to prison.

Just 10 days earlier he avoided being sent to prison at a hearing at Gloucester Crown Court. Judge Ian Lawrie QC gave him 20 months suspended for two years for causing actual bodily harm, assault by beating, possession of a bladed article and making threats to kill.

After receiving that suspended sentence on November 24, a Twitter account apparently linked to Burfoot posted: “I’m back! Fresh home.. sorry guys I got locked up but got a suspended sentence with some other orders and was released.. music soon come!”

Prosecutor Emma Charleton told Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning that Burfoot told police when they arrived at Tesco that he wanted to go to prison.

Later interviewed at Gablecross police station, Burfoot said he had nowhere to live and no money.

Appearing in court via video link from the police station, Burfoot, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to shoplifting bottles of champagne and brandy and damaging a police codes of practice book.

Magistrates remanded him in custody to appear before Swindon Crown Court on January 15, although the case is expected to be transferred to Gloucester. Chairman of the bench Alison Auvray said: “Because this puts you in breach, as you are clearly aware, of your suspended sentence order, we are going to send these matters to be dealt with at the crown court so they can then deal with the breach of that suspended sentence.”
