THE latest available government data reveals that the number of new coronavirus cases  in Swindon's hardest-hit area is more than four times that of the place with the fewest new cases.

In the seven days leading up to December 28, 46 Covid-19 cases were confirmed in the Wroughton, Wichelstowe and Chiseldon ward while only 11 were confirmed in Walcot East.

There is a similar gap between the highest rolling seven-day case rate in the borough and the lowest - Haydon Wick had 541.4 cases per 100,000 people and there were 135 cases per 100k population in Mouldon Hill and Oakhurst.

In Outer Royal Wootton Bassett and Lyneham, the number of new cases jumped by a whopping 300 per cent to 36 in the week ending December 28, compared to just 9 the week before.

Upper Stratton saw a similar jump of 250 per cent from 12 to 42.

It's not all bad news - in some parts of the borough, fewer cases are being confirmed. Central North still ranks highly with 34 new positive results, but that's 4 fewer than the previous week.

Walcot East managed to halve its number of new cases to 11 while Lawn and East Wichel had 12 fewer cases than the previous week but still had 20 new ones.

The Swindon borough is in Tier 4 while Royal Wootton Bassett and the rest of wider Wiltshire is in Tier 3.

The situation could soon change in the coming days as the ward map has not yet taken into account newer coronavirus figures for 2021, including the 155 new Covid-19 cases confirmed on New Year's Day.
