EVEN Swindon Primary School will not be reopening on Monday because teachers have invoked legal rights over safety fears.

The Rodbourne school's headteacher Alison Lowe wrote to parents and carers on Sunday afternoon to inform them of the decision and signpost advice about free school meals and remote learning equipment.

She said: "The governors and I have had to come to the difficult decision to close.

"A significant number of teaching staff, and at this point an unknown number of support staff, are following union advice and invoking their rights under section 44 of the employment at work act and stating that it is unsafe to be in school with a class of children.

"We therefore do not have sufficient staffing levels to open the school to pupils tomorrow and will be in touch again for further information for Tuesday onwards.

"Thank you for your continued support during this time."

The closure comes after the prime minister urged parents to send their children to primary school as usual tomorrow, if it's open, and insisted that schools are safe.
