AN AMAZON driver knocked a woman with his wing mirror – forcing her into a hedge, a court heard.

Cristian Flinta, 50, was out delivering parcels in his Vauxhall Vivaro van in December 2019 when he pulled onto the pavement.

Prosecutor Keith Ballinger told Swindon Magistrates’ Court a woman was walking down Norfolk Road in Harnham, near Salisbury, with her daughter.

“She said at the time it was getting dark and the street lights were on. As she’s walking along the pavement a white van has mounted the pavement behind her. It has continued and she’s been struck by the nearside wing mirror,” Mr Ballinger said.

She was forced to back into a hedge in order to avoid the van and was left shaken by the incident.

Flinta continued driving then stopped a short distance up the road and let the woman photograph him and his van. “He didn’t say anything to her and he continued to deliver what appeared to be an Amazon parcel to a nearby address,” the prosecutor added.

Appearing before the justices on Wednesday, Flinta, of Pelham Street, Newark, pleaded guilty to careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Luke Jameson, mitigating, said his client was a Romanian national who had been in the UK for around two years. He had failed to exchange details at the scene as his grasp of English was not good. The solicitor said: “He did stop but due to his lack of English not much could be done.”

He no longer worked for Amazon and was now employed by a care home in Nottinghamshire. He sent money home to his wife and children in Romania.

He was remorseful and very worried about losing his licence.

Magistrates imposed six penalty points, fined him £333 and ordered he pay £119 in costs and surcharge.
