A MOTORWAY junction is to close this weekend to carry out work to enhance the drainage of the M3.

The northbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip roads at junction 6 will close this weekend.

The fast lane of the M3 southbound carriageway will also be closed in the area for the safety of the Highways England workforce.

The road will close from 9pm on Friday, January 22, until 6am on Monday, January 25.

Lane closures are already in place on both the northbound and southbound carriageways overnight 9pm to 6am on weekdays and will last until Friday 29 January.

Under the current lockdown restricitons, residents are urged not to travel unless for one of a few limited reasons including work (where they cannot work from home), medical appointments, essential shopping, and chilcare/support bubble arrangements.

The road closure will allow Highways England to create a longer drainage channel in the central reservation, add drainage outlets and adjust the gradient of the road surface.

During the weekend closure, traffic will be diverted off the M3 via the northern exit slip road, across the roundabout to re-join the M3 via the northbound entry slip road.

Road users are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their essential travel.

Road users on the M3 heading to or from the Basingstoke area are advised to use either junction 5 or junction 7 during the closure.
