THE Highworth leisure centre being bailed out by the borough and town councils is coping well with the latest lockdown.

The Halo-owned facility is set to receive £145,000 in instalments through to December after councillors agreed to help it stay open.

The amount of money required could change if the recreation site's situation improves.

Coun Keith Smith gave an update at the last Highworth Town Council meeting.

He said: "I just wanted to check that Halo would not close like the Oasis. It's continuing to be able to stay open and furlough staff and is waiting for the national leisure recovery fund grant which they hope will be substantial.

"If they get a huge amount of money, they would seriously look at whether the payments Highworth Town Council make can be varied.

"There are no untoward concerns about Halo at this time."

Of the money promised, £30,000 comes from Highworth council’s reserves, £38,186 from a Covid-19 grant, and £47,000 from a rise in the 2021/22 council tax precept along.

Swindon Borough Council is match-funding £30,000 on top of this.
