Plans to build more than 60 homes in Royal Wootton Bassett have attracted criticism over the amount of green space in the area.

Wainhomes is behind the proposed development at Brynards Hill, with 24 of the 61 homes classed as affordable.

But campaigners believe the company should be building its promised country park before being allowed to proceed with the homes at the site next door.

Wainhomes insisted it will be building the park in the spring – following its legal obligations – and has already started preparations.

The developer has been trying to build more homes in the town for more than a decade and has a Section 106 agreement for a country park between Brynards Hill and the railway line.

Cate Watson, organiser of the Royal Wootton Bassett Environmental Group, has been fighting against the plans for a number of years and believes the country park should already be open.

She said: “It’s been 10 years that Wainhomes has been promising to build the park and, quite simply, we’d like them to fulfill their obligation to the people of Wootton Bassett.

“How is it fair that they can build homes when they haven’t already built the country park that they’ve agreed to?”

Not only does Cate have an issue with the delay in building the park, but she also wants more consultation with Wainhomes over what should be at the site.

She added: “We would like them to consult properly with the residents, and discuss what we want for the country park.

“For example, we would like for it to include children’s play areas, walking routes and be used as a key cycle route that would link different parts of Bassett.

“We’d like to see wildlife areas to look after our biodiversity but they haven’t asked us.

“Residents can fill out an online form on a planning consultant website but it’s all online. When they set it up we were in Tier 2 so they could have done more.

“They’ve shown no concern for the people of Wootton Bassett and they’ve shown no concerns for keeping their own legal obligations.”

Cate is urging anyone who has an issue with the new development to register their comments on the Wiltshire Council planning page before the February 15 deadline.

A spokesman for Wainhomes said: “Wainhomes will be fulfilling their legal obligations and will deliver the country park this spring.

"Preparatory works have already started.”
