A TEENAGER killed in a crash in Westbury last night has been named as 18-year-old Bethany Ovenden Gumm.

Insp Andrew Lemon of Wiltshire Police led tributes to the Westbury woman, offering his condolences to her family and friends.

In a statement, he asked those who wanted to leave flowers and other tributes at the roadside to follow the government’s coronavirus rules.

Insp Lemon said: "We completely understand how devastating this must be on those affected by this tragic incident and of course understand people want to come together at the scene to pay their respects and comfort each other.

"We want to make sure this is done safely and that we don't exacerbate the situation by spreading the virus so please try to bear in mind Covid restrictions and social distancing.

"We know this is a difficult and distressing time but we want people to try and remember social distancing to keep everyone safe, the last thing we want is for friends and family to become ill in the coming days.”

Ms Gumm was killed when the silver Ford Fiesta in which she was a passenger left The Mead, Westbury, after 11.40pm on Friday and struck a garden wall and tree. The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 19-year-old local man, was seriously injured and taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, where he remains.

A 17-year-old girl, who was also in the car, was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Another passenger, an 18-year-old woman, was taken to Southmead Hospital.

The Mead was shut for several hours overnight and this morning.

An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, Wiltshire Police said.
