A LORRY driver has been fined after holding two mobile phones – one to each ear – as he drove along the M4.

The man was driving on the motorway in a 44 tonne articulated lorry when he was spotted by police, using two phones at the same time.

Avon & Somerset Police filmed the driver in his cab after coming alongside his lorry along a stretch of the M4 heading eastbound between J17 and J18.

Police tweeted: "If you haven't managed to see the film, this image really does show you how driving habits need to change."

"Regardless of the distraction from the two phones, he is not steering.

"We catch drivers from all vehicle types, this just happens to be the largest."

The man has been fined £200.

The driver was filmed as part of Operation Tramline, a three-week campaign to highlight the dangers of driver distractions – including mobile devices such as phones, ‘sat navs’ and tablets – and to crack down on offenders.

Driver distractions is one of the ‘Fatal Five’ main causes of serious injuries and death on the roads, alongside driving under the influence of drink or drugs, excess or inappropriate speeds, the failure to wear seatbelts and careless or inconsiderate driving.
