This is the latest coronavirus text scam that could catch you out.

Swindon Borough Council said a number of people in the town had been sent the authentic-looking text message.

In it, the recipent is told they are entitled to a Covid-19 grant of almost £280.

The message reads: "GOVUK: Due to the new lockdown circumstances you are available for a COVID-19 grant of £277.59." People are asked to click a hyperlink.

Writing on social media, Swindon Borough Council said: "This is a scam. If you receive any suspicious texts about covid grants, don't click on the link."

Earlier this month, detectives issued a warning after people were called by someone purporting to be a police officer. Several people had been taken in by the bogus police officer scam.
