A REPORT into how the Oasis centre was closed will not be presented to councillors this evening.

Instead, the borough council’s scrutiny committee has called another evidence-giving session for members of the investigation task group on March 18. This evening’s meeting will discuss who should be called to answer questions at that session.

Members of the scrutiny committee quizzed the chief executive of the centre’s operator GLL Mark Sesnan and director of the building’s leaseholder Seven Capital John Watkins three weeks ago.

Both men told the councillors the building was old and needed millions of pounds of refurbishment if it was to be opened and run successfully in the long term.

The council leased the North Star building to private company Morai in 2012. But that company failed and the lease was picked up a few years later by Seven Capital, who contracted leisure operator GLL to run the centre.

In October, the centre shut for the second time due to lockdown, and GLL said it could not longer make a profit and so would not re-open in November.

Seven Capital took responsibility for the site back from GLL and talks continue between the company and the council to find a new operator to take on the 1970s-built centre.

The meeting starts at 6pm and a weblink will be activated to allow members of the public to attend.
