BOTTLES of urine and dog poo were among the disgusting finds on a path blighted by litter in Rushey Platt.

Cyclist Josie Lewis spotted piles of rubbish in the grass and bushes next to Redpost Drive and decided to take action herself.

But with a mattress and furniture among the waste discarded illegally, she was unable to complete the job of tidying up the area.

Josie said: “I think some of it has blown off from the main road but there are some things like furniture that has been been dumped there on purpose.

“It was absolutely filthy and disgusting. I went back there with a few bin bags but it took me 10 minutes to fill one of them, and I quickly filled the other two. The job was too big for just me – there were about 200 cans in the area.

“It’s not a well-used path, nobody can see it from the main road. So, I reported it as flytipping because it’s too much for me to clear alone.”

But Josie doesn't believe it should be left to the council to clean it up and called on people to take responsibility.

“Children drop their wrappers and their parents don’t do anything about it, they just keep going,” Josie said.

“It’s not just in Swindon, it’s all over the country and I don’t know what the solution is.

People blame the council for it but no matter how much they pick up, there’s always more.

“It’s common to find bottles full of urine, it’s disgusting, people should take it home with them. I don’t understand why they would want to make our town filthy.”

She has also found several bags of dog poo left on the floor or thrown into the trees and bushes.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “We are fortunate in Swindon to have a great number of selfless people who take pride in their local community by clearing up litter and the lady who contacted the paper to highlight the issue along Redpost Drive and the Old Town railway path certainly falls into that category.

“We would like to thank her for clearing away this rubbish and we are pleased to report the local parish council has arranged for it to be disposed of.

"It should be said, however, that these acts of kindness would not be necessary if people took a moment to think about their actions before throwing away their litter in this way.

It takes little time and effort for people to take their waste home with them, if they cannot find a bin nearby.”
