A CAR fire closed the M4 eastbound between junctions 18 and 19 for much of Tuesday afternoon.
Fire engines from Avon Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene while Highways England officers stopped traffic.
Normal traffic conditions resumed around 3.45pm.
Lane three reopened around 12.20pm to allow vehicles to travel between Bath and Bristol.
A Highways England spokesman said at the time: "Please be aware there are delays of up to 35 minutes and congestion of approximately 3.4 miles on approach to an earlier vehicle fire on the #M4 eastbound between J19 Bristol and J18 Bath. Please allow extra time for your journey this afternoon."
Closer to Swindon, two lanes closed at lunchtime because of a crash involving one vehicle.
#M4 Eastbound between J19 #Bristol and J18 #Bath, we have stopped the traffic due to a vehicle fire. @AvonFireRescue are making way.
