People wanting to pay their respects to Prince Philip during the week of mourning or his funeral on Saturday are being urged to do so at home or online.

Swindon Borough Council has set up a book of condolence for the Duke of Edinburgh’s family for those who wish to express their sympathy – but Covid-19 restrictions mean it will remain in virtual form only.

Comments can be left via the online form available from the homepage at swindon.gov.uk or by calling customer services on 01793 445500. An online book of condolence is also available on the royal family’s website www.royal.uk

The council is asking people not to gather or to lay flowers anywhere in memory of the prince because of restrictions.

A spokesman said: “We would encourage people to reflect and remember at home. There will be opportunities to come together to reflect and mourn once restrictions have eased and it is safe to do so.”

If people wish to donate in memory of the duke, the council says a donation to one of the charities he supported would be an appropriate way.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle at 3pm on Saturday.

A national minute’s silence will be held to coincide with it.
