DISRUPTION continues on the main line between London and Bristol after cracks were found in some trains.

Great Western Railway said a “significant number” of its intercity services would be cancelled today.

London North Eastern Railway, one of the affected operators of the faulty Hitachi class 800 high-speed trains, said the issue is "likely to be going on for a number of weeks".

The Hitachi trains were withdrawn from service on Saturday for safety checks after cracks were discovered in part of the chassis of several trains.

Dan Panes of GWR told the BBC the fault was not to a part of the train that meant it would be “immediately” unsafe for passengers to travel on the services.

“It’s not a part of the train that’s required, effectively, for the structural integrity of the train,” he added.

“The issue actually is whether that bit might fall off while that train is [moving] which could potentially cause some issues.”
