TIDY-MINDED Izzy Cracknell is cleaning up the streets of Royal Wootton Bassett on her morning walk to school.

The eight-year-old decided to do her bit for the environment by taking her litter picker and filling a bin bag on her way to Noremarsh Juniors.

She said: “I wanted to do it because I kept seeing litter everywhere, so I wanted to clean up and help the environment.

“The litter hurts the environment and we must help to clean up and do our bit.

“I’ve only been doing it for a few weeks and already I’ve noticed a difference, which is really good,” she said. “I filled up a bag every day, but recently it hasn’t been filling up.

“It makes me feel so happy and proud to be doing this.”

Dad Brendan is proud of her for being determined to make the town tidier and keeping her efforts up for the past few weeks.

He said: “We walk to school as often as possible. She kept seeing bits of litter on the path and on the road and she’s never been particularly happy about it.

“She doesn’t understand why people drop their rubbish and not just take it home with them. There’s a Facebook group where people share pictures and posts about them cleaning up Royal Wootton Bassett, and that’s where our idea came from. She absolutely loves doing it."

He added: “We ordered a litter-picker because there are certain things we don’t want to touch with our hands.

“Every chance she gets, she wants to go out and tidy the streets.”

Keep Bassett Tidy – Litter Pickers has more than 280 members who share their efforts in keeping the streets and public spaces in the town tidy.

“The litter around the town isn’t as bad as it used to be. I think with the efforts of the Facebook group, it has helped,” Brendan said. “I asked Izzy why she wanted to do this, and she told me ‘because it’s polluting nature and I get to walk and help the environment’.

“She’s very passionate, and the other driver is because before lockdown she started Brownies and hasn’t had the chance to earn a badge. She’s hoping by doing things like this they might give her one when she goes back.”

Izzy's route takes in Marlborough Road, Station Road, Nore Marsh Road, and the streets surrounding the school.

Brendan added: “I’m really proud of her for doing it. I like the fact that she has a focus for it, it’s her new obsession. It’s great what she’s doing.”
