THE Wilts & Berks Canal Trust’s Visitor Centre is reopening thanks to a surge in people wanting to help.

The centre has been in Theatre Square, opposite Swindon’s Central Library, for many years but had to close 18 months ago because of a drop in the number of volunteers.

Centre manager Peter Stroud said: “I am amazed and pleased at the response and determination from all to get the visitor centre up and running in such a short time.”

The centre will be open from 11am-3pm on Fridays and Saturdays, starting tomorrow. A group of volunteers have been busy installing new shelving and equipment and cleaning it up.

Hundreds of books donated to the trust will be on sale, while volunteers will promote awareness of the canal and its developments – including the Wichelstowe restoration – and provide information about boat trips on Dragonfly and other boats.
