MORE roadworks woe is on the way for Swindon motorists.

It was announced on Monday that the White Hart roundabout – one of the town's busiest junctions – will be shutting completely for three months between August and November.

The unscheduled work to keep the road stable will add £2.6m to the cost of Swindon Borough Council's £30m project.

It comes on top of a number of other incomplete or overrunning road schemes on key routes around the town, including Mead Way, the Moonrakers junction and Oxford Road.

The news sparked plenty of reaction on the Adver's Facebook page and here is a selection of the comments we received...

Dave Mills: "This will cause more havoc to South Marston. Already everyone goes through the village due to the never-ending work to put a path in by Gablecross. How about finishing that first before messing up even more roads? Total incompetence."

Neil Nutley: "As inconvenient as it is, it needs doing. Unsafe roads can and will cause catastrophic accidents."

Danny Mason: "Honestly, who at the council is responsible for this? Someone needs to answer for it. Bruce Street Bridges major overspend and delay, Bridgemead exactly the same and now White Hart."

Gail Sargeant: "How can they get it so badly wrong? And who picks up the extra cost?"

Andy Harris: "May as well just tear up every road in Swindon. So many roadworks."

Alan Bateman: "By the time this is finished, the technology for us to 'beam' ourselves to Sainsburys will exist!"

Leo Swift: "This is going to be hell! I bet the residents of South Marston are over the moon with this."

Derek Rutland: "Will it get done by Christmas or will it take longer than they say it will and cost more than they say it will? We can only wait and see."

Dee Riordan: "The problem is the amount of cars vehicles on all roads. They can widen the road, put in another lane, add another roundabout... it's the amount of traffic that's the real basis of the entire problem. Less traffic equals more space and no extra cost to taxpayers. How? Who knows ? It will never improve."

Visitors commenting on the Adver's website also had much to say on the subject...

Terry Norman: "They can't be serious! The company who conducted the infrastructure survey before work began need to be held to account as this will cause absolute chaos."

Mike Fowler: "So once again we have roadworks over running due to a 'we have a problem'. Why is it that every scheme in this town goes that way – Mead Way, Stratton crossroads, Piccadilly roundabout, Oxford Road and now a major roundabout junction that will cause absolute carnage to road users and residents. The areas around the roundabout will become rat runs - South Marston, Highworth, Wanborough, Liddington, Shrivenham – the list is endless."

'The Lone Groover': "Nightmare. I work on the South Marston industrial estate and I use the White Hart roundabout to get home to Covingham plus it's a lot quicker and easier than going down Swindon Road and across Greenbridge. Also, what about trying to get to Sainsbury's supermarket at Gablecross?"

'LifeGirl': "Swindon's roadworks should be a gift from God for Labour. It is a fire that they could light and keep burning. As is our dystopian town centre for that matter. So where are they? What are they doing? Why are they not holding the people who make these decisions to account?"

'Morsey': "I cannot imagine any opposition party anywhere in the land which would want to inherit the total carnage of poor decisions made by the Tory administration? Also, how come so much road improvements/repairs have become the responsibility of the council and not the national government onus?"

'Longstrangeroad': "The ruling Swindon councillors should resign en masse. How many more businesses do they have to ruin? How many more lives do they have to blight? How many more road schemes will carry on forever having discovered something perfectly predictable."
