A GRANDMOTHER on a mission to complete 70 challenges for charity has got her first tattoo - and has already decided it won’t be her last.

Kate Crutcher embarked on her quest to mark her 70th birthday after her son and husband died from cancer.

A new butterfly tattoo - the Brighter Futures charity logo - decorates her arm after her appointment at Elemental Tattoo Studio Swindon. And Kate, 72, has already booked another session.

She said: “As it wasn’t as bad as I expected, I’m sorry to say I’ve already booked a second one.

“I’ve spent all my life saying ‘I’ll never do that, I’ll never do that’ and here I am. This tattoo is important because it says to people how vitally important small charities are, especially through the time we’re going through at the moment.

“Having done it, I thought that it isn’t as bad as I first thought. I looked down and said ‘oh you’re finished’.

“I’m going to have another tattoo done for my husband and son. They know I love birds and my husband was a life member of the RSPB. I’m going to have a tattoo of a lovely bird.

“I’m a little bit sore, but it’s nothing to what I had expected. It wasn’t too bad at all.”

Royal Wootton Bassett resident Kate was inspired to take on a series of challenges in their memory and has now completed 58 out of 70, raising more than £8,000 in the process.

Upcoming challenges include a yoga headstand and her second skydive for Prospect Hospice, which will take place on August 22.

She said: “They support everything I do, not just for them, but for other charities. They really are wonderful.

“They supported me so I want to support them.I can’t really do enough for them."

“They’ve come to learn how crazy I am at the moment and what sort of things I’d do.

“I feel like a family member now, it’s like popping in to see your family, I go in to have a good chat and chinwag.

“I’ve made some lovely friends at the team, it’s been wonderful.”

Kate enjoyed her tattoo and said it wasn't quite as tricky as her last challenge - a go-karting session at M4 Karting near Hullavington.

“The tattoo went better than the go-karting. “It was very challenging, I hit the buffers a few times and had a surprisingly difficult time trying to steer.

“I’m afraid I did shed a few tears, but I did do it, we got there in the end.”
