Five vehicles were involved in this morning's serious accident the A419, police have confirmed - with the northbound carriageway still shut.

The Wiltshire force says there are no reported fatalities.

The accident happened between 9.30am and 10.00am today, and after initially shutting both sides of the dual carriageway the southbound road was reopened around 20 minutes later.

The northbound will remain shut for a number of hours, police say.

Multiple fire engines and ambulances were in attendance at the scene and police were slowly diverting roughly 100 road users who were stuck behind the accident to turn around the wrong way down the dual carriageway to get off at the Merlin Way junction.

As a result of the northbound lane closure, which stretches back towards Commonhead roundabout, queues have formed from the roundabout, down Marlborough Road, along Dorcan Way and all the way to Greenbridge.

A spokesperson from Wiltshire Police provided an update on the ongoing incident.

They said: "We were called to reports of a serious road traffic incident on the A419 shortly after 9.30am today (August 26) involving five vehicles.

"The road has been closed northbound to allow emergency services to attend and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The southbound carriageway is open.

"There are no reported fatalities.

"We will provide further updates as this develops."
