The huge £400m warehouse being built for Amazon in the Gablecross area is really coming on.

Most of the building just to the south of the A420 in Symmetry Park seems to be constructed and the familiar logo of the internet commerce giant is emblazoned on the building in huge letters.

Construction and fitting out continues and there is no access to the site - but the developer Panattoni says it is expected to be finished by the end of this year.

The company's website said: "The tenant requires the facility to be operational in the fourth quarter 2021, to achieve this demands a highly accelerated programme and complex phasing to facilitate fit-out."

Amazon itself has been very reticent in talking about the project but it is advertising jobs at the site - suggesting it might even be open within six weeks.

When the plans for the building were first put in, Panattoni said it could bring more than 1,000 jobs to Swindon.

The advert on its website says: "This is a job for life, not just for Christmas.

You will be based in our brand-new state of the art facility in Swindon from the end of October. We also have opportunities available to start with us straight away at our Bristol site to allow you to be fully trained prior to the launch of Swindon. If you take us up on this option, free transport between the two locations will be provided.

Pay at the warehouse will be £11.10 per hour for day shifts, £12.85 per hour for night time shifts and overtime will be paid at between £16.65 and £22.20 per hour.

Leader of Swindon Borough Council David Renard has been a long-term supporter of Amazon's coming to Swindon - he spoke at the meeting of the council's planning committee which gave the development approval in June 2020.

He said: "We are delighted that Amazon has selected Swindon as one of its logistics hubs creating many jobs, including some high skilled ones, and investing so significantly in our economy.

"Swindon is a great place to do business with a very capable workforce as well as being a great place to work, live and play. We look forward to the Amazon building becoming a centre of activity in the near future.”

Panattoni sold the warehouse site to Legal and General Investment Managers for £200m last year in the biggest deal for a single warehouse ever made in Britain.

Amazon is understood to have a 20-year lease on the building, paying around £10m a year

The Symmetry Park warehouse is not the only building being put up for Amazon in the borough.

The company is the client for a new data centre to be built on the site of two disused computer halls in Burderop - plans for the new building were approved just a few weeks ago.
