CHRISTMAS events will be held around Lydiard House and its surrounding park.

The Swindon Borough Council-owned stately home is hosting festive lunches, party night packages, comedy dinner shows, festive afternoon teas and carols by candlelight.

This year’s dinner shows are Del Boy’s Comedy Christmas Show and Basil’s Christmas Carol, a Fawlty Towers twist on the Dickens Christmas Classic with an interactive dinner show.

There are some afternoon festive treats at Lydiard House including an historical guided tour. All guests will be invited on a tour of the house, giving them the opportunity to step back in time to the Georgian period.

Lydiard House was home to the St John family for 500 years, and visitors will hear their history in a 45-minute tour followed by a festive afternoon tea.

The historic State Rooms will be adorned with traditional foliage, a kissing ball and a decorated Christmas tree. Floral decorations will Line mantle-pieces and doorways.

Royal Wootton Bassett Flower Arranging Club has once again decorated the house.

Carols by Candlelight will be held at St Mary’s Church followed by High Tea.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, an extensive and fascinating conservation project is currently restoring the church’s precious structure and interior.

Coun Robert Jandy, said: “Lydiard always puts on some amazing festive events for Christmas and this year is no different.

“If you’re still looking for something to do over the winter period then why not book an experience? You’ll be surrounded by one of Swindon’s great historical landmarks and be surrounded by a feel-good Christmas mood.”

Mr Love’s Heritage Cider will be on sale, named after the man in charge of the lawns and gardens at Lydiard Park at the turn of the 20th Century and, as head gardener, he tended the flowers and rare fruit trees.

Mr Love’s Heritage Still Cider is made from a unique blend of over 30 apple varieties dating back to 1743 or earlier. All the apples have been handpicked from the walled garden at Lydiard Park and the proceeds will be invested back into the development of the garden and surrounding parkland.
