THE Christmas lights in Royal Wootton Bassett will be switched on tomorrow evening (December 3).

The High Street will be closed to traffic from the Coxstalls Roundabout to near the Town Hall and junction with Station Road from 3pm to 10pm.

The seasonal celebrations will begin at 6pm and last until 9pm. Visitors can enjoy trying festive food and drink, a brass band, carol singing, browsing Christmassy stalls, and visiting Santa's grotto among other activities.

Santa's Grotto will be open from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and cost £1.50 per child, which includes a present. A balloon modeller will entertain youngster in the queue.

The event often attracts as many as eight to 10,000 people.

A town council spokesman said: "Planning for this started in January and on the night over 30 people volunteer to help with the event, manning road closures, assisting stall holders, checking permits, dealing with any issue arising from visitors attending the night, to litter picking and many more besides.

"We would like to give special thanks to Bevirs Solicitors for sponsoring the two large High Street Christmas trees and to WGS Power for their lighting of the High Street. We hope everyone will have an enjoyable night."

The town council recommend wearing a face mask and maintaining social distancing whenever possible in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.
