A DRINK driver has been banned from the road after ploughing into the side of a police car while drunk behind the wheel of his Land Rover

Francis Saunders, 54, of Greatfield, Royal Wootton Bassett, was arrested after the crash on the B4042 at Brinkworth at 11.30pm on Wednesday, October 27.

No-one was injured in the smash, but Saunders was found to be over the legal alcohol limit at roadside.

He pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the alcohol limit at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on December 1.

He was banned from driving for 20 months - to be reduced if Saunders completes an approved course - fined £416 and made to pay a victim surcharge.

In a statement on social media the police said: "Yesterday we launched the national drink and drug drive campaign, which will run throughout December.

"Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit will be supported by Community Policing Teams across Wiltshire and Swindon to carry out increased patrols and operational activity, conduct high profile and intelligence-led traffic stops, and target those motorists who pose a huge risk to themselves and the lives of other road users.

"If you are suspicious of someone driving dangerously or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then please call 101 and give as much information as possible, including the driver's details or description and their car registration.

"If you believe that a crime is being committed and somebody is already behind the wheel then please call 999."
