A pub not far from Swindon has responded after Jay Rayner hailed one of their dishes as among his best of last year.

The Observer food critic and Masterchef judge was impressed by The Double Red Duke when he visited last year.

And now the pub, located in the village of Clanfield close to Lechlade, has featured in his highlights of 2021.

Writing in The Observer on December 26, Jay said he "loved the butch, gutsy cooking at the Double Red Duke".

He went on to single out the restaurant's devilled kidneys for particular praise.

The Victorian British breakfast dish consists of lamb's kidneys cooked in a spicy sauce, containing Worcestershire sauce, mustard, butter, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper.

Jay wrote: "I loved the butch, gutsy cooking at the Double Red Duke, with its glossily sauced devilled kidneys and its fat scallops under drifts of garlicky crumbs."

The Double Red Duke opened last summer, and the team initially collaborated with Hawksmoor’s Richard Turner to create the menu.

Responding to Jay Rayner's review, general manager Sion Hamilton said: "We were thrilled with Jay’s review and being included in his highlights of the year was such an honour.

"We have such a strong team so this is a real reflection of all their hard work and passion over the last year.

"We are glad to see so many people coming through our doors since opening and being so supportive of what we do here at The Double Red Duke.

"The devilled kidneys on toast is such a simple dish but the earthy, spicy flavours make it very popular among our guests!"
