THE number of new coronavirus cases confirmed in Swindon is falling - but infection rates around the borough and its outskirts remain very high.
The latest map from the government shows the area staying mostly dark purple as infection rates remain in quadruple figures even as fewer people are testing positive for the disease after the Omicron variant arrived.
In the seven days leading up to January 17, Swindon had 2,533 new Covid cases, which was 728 (22.3 per cent) fewer than the previous week, and an infection rate of 1,136.5 cases per 100,000 people.
Cricklade, Freshbrook North and Grange Park, and Westlea and Shaw saw fewer than 50 new cases, but Broad Blunsdon, South Marston and Wanborough, Rodbourne and Cheney Manor, and Shrivenham had more than 140.
