An unannounced roadblock, which blocked access to private homes, has left a Grange Park resident fuming.

Steve Plumley, who lives in Camden Road, was stunned to find blue barriers restricting vehicular access to his property last week.

Mr Plumley said workers on CityFibre's £40 million project to improve Swindon’s broadband had trapped his car without any warning.

It is not the first time City Fibre has come under fire for an incident of this kind.

Last week, a Toothill resident was shocked to find blue barriers and an 18in trench restricting access to his home in Idovers Drive.

Swindon Advertiser:

This is just the latest incident in ongoing disruption for residents, according to Mr Plumley.

“It’s been very difficult to get off my drive because they [the workers] parked a large van in the way," he said.

“I have been able to get off, but with great difficulty, but today (March 9) they blocked the entire road off.

“I’m just shocked really, to be honest.

"What I can’t understand is that they are working 30 yards away, but they can’t walk to the house and knock on the door.

“If they said something before they started doing I could have taken my car off and parked it somewhere so I could go to the shop,” explained Mr Plumley.

The Grange Park resident claimed that there was a lack of respect from CityFibre and health and safety had gone out of the window.

“There’s a school up the road and school kids are having to walk onto the road, cos there’s no pavement for them to walk on," he said.

“If they don’t improve their health and safety, then somebody is going to get hit by a vehicle.”

Neil Madle, CityFibre’s city manager for Swindon, said: “We’re sorry to learn about this issue as we always endeavour to minimise disruption and complete all works as quickly as possible.

"The works on Camden Close is part of our £40m digital infrastructure investment across the town, and we are working closely with stakeholders to ensure works are completed swiftly and efficiently."
