Avid steam railway enthusiasts are in for a treat tomorrow as Flying Scotsman returns to Wiltshire.

The world-famous steam locomotive is set to haul the Cathedrals Express from London Victoria to Salisbury and return.

It was built at Doncaster Works in 1923 by the London and North Eastern Railway and was withdrawn from service in January 1963. The engine is currently owned by the National Railway Museum.

‘Flying Scotsman’ is famous as it is officially the first steam locomotive to hit 100mph, which it achieved in 1934.

As well as hauling enthusiast specials in the United Kingdom, the locomotive toured extensively in the United States and Canada from 1969 to 1973 and Australia from 1988 to 1989.

As a result, the Doncaster built engine has admirations from all over the planet.

The special charter train which is being run by Steam Dreams is scheduled to run to Salisbury on the Southwestern mainline via Basingstoke and Andover, before returning to London on the same route.

Dining passengers will enjoy breakfast on the outward journey and a two-course Pullman Style dining evening meal on the return leg.

Timings are not being made public due to crowd safety concerns.

However, the locomotive will be steaming into Sainsbury, late morning. Before leaving for the capital in the evening.
