A JUNIOR school has been given a glowing report by Ofsted inspectors.

Ruskin Junior School, in Upper Stratton, was particularly praised for its curriculum, care, guidance and support.

Headteacher, Creighton Muirhead, pictured, who was commended in the report for his "outstanding leadership", said he was very pleased with the report.

He said: "This report really captured what we're all about.

"It recognised that what the school is about is taking each child as an individual.

"We try to meet individual needs by providing opportunities for children to achieve - sometimes in ways that surprise even the child."

The report, which followed inspections on January 14 and 15 gave the school a judgement of outstanding for its curriculum.

Inspectors said: "The underlying curriculum philosophy of maximising all individuals' talents and abilities is very successful."

Ofsted also pointed to outstanding care, guidance and support at the school, while staff commitment was said to have led to "examples of exceptional achievement".

The Beehive provision for autistic children and for children with learning difficulties was found to be "excellent, meeting pupils' needs extremely well".

The overall atmosphere of the school was also commended with the report stating that "there is a creative buzz of enjoyment throughout the day as pupils move briskly from one exciting activity to another".

Nigel Tucker, chairman of governors, said: "The governors are delighted that this report reflects the school's improving performances over recent years."

Areas for improvement noted in the report included the attainment of more able students in science. Seeking ways to improve accommodation for smaller groups was also highlighted as a key area .

"It clearly recognises the strong present position of the school's teaching standards and focus on providing a creative and enjoyable school environment," said Mr Tucker.

"We are confident this is a good platform for continued excellent performance over the coming years."
