WORK will soon begin on transforming the western end of Fleming Way into a bus boulevard.

Cheltenham Street car park will permanently close on Tuesday April 19 and Swindon Borough Council's contractor for the £33 million bus interchange scheme, Colas UKP, will be working in the area until next February.

The main part of the scheme will get underway from September, with Fleming Way closed to all traffic between the junction of Milford Street and the Whalebridge junction. The overall scheme is scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2024.

Motorists will be directed along clearly signed diversion routes around the town centre while the work is being carried out.

Pedestrian routes across Fleming Way will remain open at all times throughout the project to maintain access between the town centre and the Swindon train and bus stations.

Swindon bus station will remain open throughout the next two years and buses which currently stop on Fleming Way will be redirected to other bus stops around town, including some new ones which will be provided by the council. More details about these will follow in the near future.

More information about the scheme is on the website  www.swindon.gov.uk/busboulevard

Regular updates from the project will be provided in a dedicated Fleming Way Improvements newsletter. To sign up, visit www.swindon.gov.uk/newsletter
