DRIVERS using one of Swindon's busiest junctions are facing a 'lottery'.

That is the claim from one commuter, who says a problem with the traffic lights at Junction 16 of the M4 for the west of Swindon could lead to a 'bad accident'.

The motorist, who did not wish to be named, wrote in an email to the Adver: “I have been reporting to the highways department about the traffic lights that have not been working on three sections of junction 16

“I travel this way twice a day. To get out onto the roundabout is like a lottery with no lights - there is going to be a bad accident.

“Highways say it was reported on the March 15 and fixed on the March 16 but I've told them this is incorrect.”

The lights at Spittleborough Roundabout control the flow of traffic onto the M4, the A3102, the B4005 and the B4534.

National Highways service delivery manager Julian Strong said: “We’re working with specialist engineers to resolve a repair to the traffic signals at the top of the M4 eastbound exit slip road at junction 16.

“Power was affected following a single vehicle incident, where a car left the carriageway and damaged roadside equipment that controls the traffic lights.

“Signs have been in place since the incident, we apologise for the inconvenience and thank drivers for their patience while we await the necessary repairs.”
