Swindon Borough Council has announced that members of the public will soon be able to view the plans for the upcoming £33million Fleming Way improvements.

Work has already started on the major town centre route, with barriers being put up, with construction expected to be ongoing until Autumn 2024.

But now there will be two events taking place this week where the plans can be viewed.

The scheme's contractor, Colas Ltd, and the council's project team will also be at these events to answer questions and meet members of the public.

The first event will be on Tuesday May 10 from 11am to 3pm and the second on Thursday May 12 from 3pm to 7pm.

"This is a chance for the public to understand what improvements will be made to Fleming Way and why they are so necessary to the town centre," the council said in a Facebook post.

The aim of the scheme, which will replace the ageing current bus station and ensure all buses leave from a single location, is to "create one inclusive bus interchange that will accomodate all bus services in the town centre."

It also hopes to improve life for pedestrians and cyclists with new routes added to make the centre of Swindon easier to access and move around for them.

In addition to this, the plans confirmed that the current Fleming Way underpass will be demolished and replaced by an open space to "create an attractive and welcoming route from the train station into the town centre".

Although some residents are optimistic about the development, most so far have met the plans with a mixture of scepticism and pessimism.

But the council insists it will be a positive thing for the area.

"The scheme is expected to stimulate further investment in the town centre along Fleming Way - and potentially Station Road, Fleet Street and Bridge Street – by increasing land values by as much as £34m and unlocking new residential development at the adjacent Kimmerfields site," the body said.
