A warning has been issued after a Swindon council housing tenant was scammed out of rent money.
Swindon Borough Council told followers of the incident on social media to raise awareness.
It wrote: "Someone phoned atenant claiming to be from housing and told them that they needed to pay as much as they could afford to pay today on their rent account, or it would be classed as a missed payment.
"They were then given bank details to transfer money to."
Believing the phone call was genuine, the tenant transferred money into the given bank account.
The council is urging people to stay vigilant and share the information with any tenants who might not have access to social media.
The post continued: "If a housing officer contacts you, they will be able to verify details of your account with you so you know it is a genuine call."
