No performance of Legally Blonde would be complete without an appearance from Elle Wood's iconic dog Bruiser.

Producers of Legally Blonde the Musical, are on the hunt for a dog to star in the show when it comes to the Wyvern Theatre in August and applications are now open for pets to audition.

In the film starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods and in the West End stage show Bruiser is typically played by a chihuahua, but auditions are open for any small dog breed.

Swindon Advertiser:

This is what the team are looking for in a ‘Bruiser’:

  • Temperament – your dog should be relaxed, good with people and enjoy a good fuss, it will be working alongside young people, so being relaxed around children is essential
  • Responsive to commands – your dog should respond to ‘come here’, ‘sit’ and so on rather than just wandering off and doing its own thing
  • Tricks – judges aren’t necessarily expecting tricks, but if your dog has any, they would love to see them. They will get five minutes to show off, and if their skills are good enough, they could end up in the show!

Producers added that if the dog has prior experience of being onstage then it will be a huge bonus, although that's not essential.

A spokesperson said: "Even the most confident of dogs can suddenly be affected by the lights, the band, and the huge round of applause they are bound to receive on their big entrance!"

Based on the 2001 hit American comedy this musical version which is part of this year's Summer Youth Project will include 150 Young People from in and around Swindon with a professional creative team.

Swindon Advertiser:

The story follows Elle Woods, a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend by getting a degree at Harvard Law School and in the process, overcomes stereotypes against blondes and triumphs as a successful lawyer.

Legally Blonde runs August 18-20, with the star dog being needed from August 13 for rehearsals.

Auditions will be held at Swindon Arts Centre on Sunday, July 3 between 12 and 5pm.
