Residents are invited to come and help clean up the Oasis site in North Star this weekend.

Local councillors have organised a community clean-up day on the site bto mark the decade since it was let to Seven Capital on a 99-year lease – making the building company the effective owners of the site and building.

The leisure centre was closed in the 2020 lockdowns and opened briefly again that summer. But when a second large-scale lockdown was ordered in October the  operating company, GLL, trading as Better, announced they would not re-open the centre again once lockdown was lifted.

Since then the building has been shut and litter has been accumulating in the car parks and grounds despite the occasional clear up by residents and community groups.

There is no prospect of the building being reopened soon.

Seven Capital did lodge a planning application last year which would have seen the existing building, including the famous dome, knocked down and the centre rebuilt.

That was withdrawn when the government listed the 1976 original building. It is possible to redevelop the building, but listing makes it more difficult and expensive.

The community clear-up starts at 10.30am on Sunday.
