IS IT a bird, is it a plane, no it's Swindon Town's very own Superman.

Robins captain Hasney Aljofree showed off his Superman pants during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Cheltenham at the County Ground on the orders of goal hero Billy Paynter.

It came after the Adver superimposed the skipper's head onto the body of the superhero last Friday.

"The stick has not stopped from the lads since Friday," said Hasney.

"Ever since the article they have been coming in with Superman T-shirts and have even superimposed my head onto Clark Kent's body.

"As a joke Billy Paynter got me the pair of pants and said I had to wear them.

"If he scored he said I had to show them off.

"It's a bit of fun and light hearted banter. Even the referee had a joke about it.

"He said it was a good job they were Superman pants otherwise he would have booked me."

Hasney said the pants have now been disposed of but he doubted whether the stick would stop anytime soon. Meanwhile, the Advertiser went out onto the town's streets to see if Swindon had gone pants mad. We purchased a pair of white y-fronts, black silk boxers with red hearts, Superman pants and a black thong before asking the public what they thought of our purchases.

Robert Holmes, 27, from Haydon Wick said he would opt for love hearts particularly as today is Valentine's Day.

"They would be something I'd wear," said the part-time student and labourer.

"They're silk as well which is good and my girlfriend would like that."

The Superman pants caught Dean Smith's eye.

"They are quite quirky," said the 25-year-old assistant manager from Eldene.

"I think they're a bit more manly than the rest.

"I wouldn't wear them for normal everyday use but I would if I scored a goal for Swindon."

Sales assistants' Frances Young, 20, and Jana Vanichova, 21, both from Pinehurst, said the hearts were romantic and the Superman pants were colourful.

Liz Cox, a 43-year-old sales assistant from Highworth said: "The hearts are very appropriate for Valentines Day. I'm not sure about the thong and the other pants though."

Mathew Hadcraft, 19, added: "I'd pay £12 for the Superman pants - they're cool."

The underwear was bought from Debenhams in the town centre. But H&M in Regent Street said they sold a range of comic-style pants.

An employee said that although they do not sell superman pants she was fully in support of Hasney's choice.

Swindon lingerie firm Triumph said sales of heart pants were doing very well.

"Sales are buoyant," said spokeswoman Sue Loder.
