A SMOKER has been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds after leaving a cigarette butt on the street.

Gilles Minguet, of Stafford Street, Swindon, left a cigarette butt on Lindred Road in Nelson, Lancashire, on March 31.

The breach of the Environmental Protection Act was proved through the single justice procedure on July 26.

The 41-year-old received a £220 fine and must pay costs of £100 as well as £34 towards victim services.

Preston Magsitrates Court dealt with the sentencing for the charge which said Minguet "threw down, dropped or otherwise deposited litter".

Not putting the cigarette butt in a bin has ended up costing him £354.
