COUNTRY folk and urban town dwellers alike are likely to find something of interest at the Wiltshire Game & Country Fair this weekend.

Once again, the two-day fair is being held on Saturday and Sunday, August 13 and 14, from 10am to 6pm at the Bowood House Estate at Derry Hill near Calne.

The two-day fair - which usually attracts more than 10,000 visitors - was cancelled in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson for organisers, Ashbourne-based Living Heritage Events Ltd, said: "We're hoping to get close to the 10,000 again this year, spread over the two days."

The event is billed as a "really good day out" for families and country people and will feature all-day entertainment in the main arena.

It features the World of Dogs, with action-packed displays, gundog demonstrations, a gundog clinic, breeds village, lurcher and whippet showing, and a fun dog show with 21 classes.

Other areas feature falconry and fishing, a shooting village, clay pigeon shooting, and plenty of opportunities to try your hand at country crafts.

There will also be a food show, cookery demonstrations, and lots of country sports, including lumberjacking and chainsaw carving.

Visitors will be able to learn how to fish, fly a hawk, or handle a gundog, or have a go at throwing a pot, paint a pot or make a sand picture.

For the children, there will be hamster displays, ferret racing and displays, and social history displays as well as a craft village with lots of craftspeople at work.

The British Scurry and Trials Driving Championships, the Horse Boarding UK Championship, also take place at the fair.

The Paws for Thought Dog Display Team and Ben Long’s falconry team will also be putting on a show in the Andy Singleton arena.

The arenas are interlinked and surrounded by a selection of country stalls selling everything from country sports equipment, clothing and accessories to home and garden products, craft and food.

Dogs are welcome to attend provided they are kept on leads and owners tidy up after them. Dogs should not be left unattended in vehicles during the hot weather.

There are facilities for people with disabilities, including parking, mobility scooters through Advanced Mobility, and toilets for the disabled.

Tickets for adults are £16 and for OAPs £15, and for children £6. Family tickets cost £38 for two adults and up to three children.
