THE MP for Chippenham has called for an "urgent review" into fuel prices across the county.

It comes after Michelle Donelan MP was "alerted to the fact local petrol stations are charging different amounts despite being owned by the same company!

Ms Donelan took to her Facebook page to share images where she had screenshot the difference in prices in various towns.

Chippenham showed up to be more expensive than Melksham or Trowbridge at the time of posting.

An example of this was given by the fact a petrol station owned by Sainsbury’s was selling petrol for 167.9p a litre, but the Sainsbury’s-owned station in Chippenham had priced it at 178.9p a litre.

Ms Donelan said: "I have contacted Greg Hands who is the Minister responsible - there isn’t a rule against this but the Competition and Markets Authority are looking at localised anti-competitive behaviour. They have said they would welcome further evidence."

She also shared a letter with her Facebook followers that was written to the CMA from the Secretary of State for Business.

Swindon Advertiser:

Michelle added: "The request for evidence has closed but I will write to the CMA with the details of what is happening locally.

"I will also write to Sainsbury’s too and make it clear that treating people in this way makes no sense and is unfair."

The letter added: "Healthy competition in the market is key to ensuring drivers get a fair deal for fuel across the UK.

"I am therefore grateful to the CMA for its work over the past four weeks responding to my request, given the widespread concern about road fuel prices.’

"I note with interest that the CMA considers the issues raised by its review- including a widening gap between the price of crude oil entering refineries and the wholesale price of petrol and diesel; as well as the local price variation- warrant further to investigation.

"I therefore welcome the decision to launch a full market study under the Enterprise Act 2002, as I requested in my letter of June 11."

A resident from Chippenham raised the alarm on his witter page, calling out several companies for their high prices in the town.

But some people think the situation could be getting better.

Another resident tweeted: "Fuel prices are dropping in Chippenham Sainsburys which is good news but need it to keep going down."
