Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Police have given an update on the travellers in Wroughton.

Earlier today, a group of at least nine caravans was spotted encamping in the old Wroughton Park and Ride car park.

Wiltshire Police have confirmed a locked gate to the area was damaged on Saturday.

A cop car was spotted driving away from the scene earlier on Monday morning.

However, Swindon Borough Council have confirmed the group intends to leave the site.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are aware of this latest encampment and are working with Wiltshire Police to move the group on from the area.

“The group have indicated they will be vacating the site tomorrow (16 August).

When asked to comment, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We are aware of a group of people and vehicles on the former Park & Ride site in Wroughton.

“We received a report of damage caused to a locked gate at the site on Saturday at 11.40am.

“We understand the group intends to leave the site today (Monday.)"

Wroughton Park and Ride has been abandoned for a number of years.

Earlier this month travellers were spotted on Tovey Road in Pinehurst where a significant mess was left.

Bin bags and bedding were left dumped in the stream, along with energy and fizzy drink cans.

Tree branches were also cut and left in the field.

In July, travellers returned to the recreation ground in Highworth for the third time - to the dismay of business owners and residents.

The news upset the people of the town after problems were caused by travellers in both July 2021 and last month, with pubs and the leisure centre forced to close and the junior football club's facilities vandalised.
