ENERGY costs for household appliances will become increasingly expensive – but could have been even worse without the new price cap.

Research by an electronics provider has predicted that the monthly cost of everyday essentials like fridge freezers and washing machines would almost double if they had continued to increase in line with soaring inflation.

The government has introduced an energy price cap in an attempt to stop bills from becoming too costly to afford, so that a typical household in Great Britain pays, on average, around £2,500 a year on their energy bill for the next two years.

But even with this cap, there will still be an extra expense for homeowners and renters from next month.

A Freemans spokesman said: “We have analysed the average energy usage across a range of popular household appliances from each room of the house to reveal exactly how much each item contributes to our monthly electricity bill.

“We then compiled the top 10 most expensive appliances in the home to find that from these 10 items alone, UK households face an average monthly cost of £227.15.”

Fridge freezers topped the table, currently costing £60.48 a month, which increases to £73.44 with the price cap and £110.16 without it.

Washing machines were a distant second at £30.24 a month, which will rise to £36.72 from October 1 but would have been £55.08 if in line with inflation.

Dishwashers came third, adding £27.72 a month to our bills at the moment, which goes up to 333.66 next month and could have cost as much as £50.49 without the price cap.

These three appliances alone now set households back £118.44 per month, and around £1,421.28 a year.

The monthly cost of a tumble dryer appears lower at £14, but it will go up to £17 from Saturday and would have nearly doubled to £25.50 without the price cap.

Though living rooms tend to have a lot of electronic devices plugged into their sockets, the energy usage of this tech is at the lower end of the list.

Charging laptops currently costs around £6.30 a month in terms of energy (soon to be £7.65), while TVs cost £5.88, videogame consoles cost £3.58 a month, and everything else – tablets, sound systems, diffusers, radios, lamps – costs £1 or less.

At £20.16 a month, using an electric blanket currently costs more than anything in the living room.
